Chlorination of an Unknown Well Location

Trumbull County Health Department
Division of Environmental Health

If a homeowner needs to chlorinate their well for testing and is unable to locate their well, the Trumbull County Health Department recommends the following steps:

· Sample without chlorinating

Notify Health Department you were unable to chlorinate well.

If test results come back unsafe the well must be located so that potential health risks can be determined and resolved.

· Option #1 Obtain well log

Search the ODNR web site: http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/water/maptechs/wellogs/app/ and get well log number for your well.

Call ODNR to see if they have a drawing for your well location.

· Option # 2 Check basement pipe direction - There should be one or two pipes leaving basement:

1) observe angle of pipes leaving basement

2) go outside and attempt to follow the direction of the pipe

3) look for indication such as a depression in the ground

4) dig and expose the well.

· Option # 3 Use metal detector

Inquire with professional driller, utility company etc. to see if they would be able to help locate well. Also, you can purchase a top of the line metal detector and attempt to locate well yourself. Note: Do not probe for well because you may damage water line.

Chlorination with Reverse Osmosis

When chlorinating a well that uses reverse osmosis:

· Be sure to by-pass the reverse osmosis unit. There should be a valve to turn off.

· You do not want chlorinated water to pass through reverse osmosis system.

· Contact Provider Company for the reverse osmosis unit to see if the unit needs to be checked after a flooding event.
